Abstract

This study explores the role of reference and information services in enhancing service delivery in academic libraries in Benue State. A survey research design was employed, with the population comprising 50,000 students, academic, and non-academic staff from five academic institutions: Benue State University, Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Akperan Orshi College of Agriculture, Benue State Polytechnic, and College of Education, Katsina-Ala. A sample of 397 respondents was selected using Yamene's formula. Data were collected using a researcher-developed questionnaire, which was validated by experts and tested for reliability with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, regression analysis, and ANOVA. The findings reveal that services such as thesis and dissertation databases, institutional repositories, and bibliographic instruction are frequently used, while subject-specific databases and online catalogues remain underutilized due to factors like limited awareness and accessibility issues. Additionally, reference services like in-person assistance and access to electronic databases are more frequently used, while services such as email reference and interlibrary loan are rarely utilized. The study emphasizes the significant influence of information services, such as information literacy programs and online databases, on enhancing the academic experience. The study recommendations for improving resource accessibility, promoting underutilized services, strengthening reference services, and fostering better collaboration between academic libraries and departments. It also advocates for continued investment in information literacy programs to empower students and faculty in navigating library resources effectively.
